How Snoopy, the Beloved Beagle, Became an Icon in the Watch World

In the group of characters that have moved from their comic strip origins to become cultural icons, Snoopy, Charles M. Schulz's lovable and infamous beagle from "Peanuts", holds a unique place – even in the elite circles of horology. The journey of this imaginative, often whimsical character from the funny pages into the meticulous world of watchmaking is as fascinating as it is unexpected. Here, we explore how Snoopy ended up as a celebrated figure in the watch world, charming enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Origins in the Stars: Snoopy's Astronomical Rise

To understand Snoopy's transition into the horological sphere, you must look up. In 1969, the Apollo 10 mission used "Snoopy" as the call sign for the lunar module, which would snoop around the moon's surface in preparation for the Apollo 11 moon landing. The command module was aptly named "Charlie Brown." This NASA mission sealed Snoopy's fate as an emblem of adventurous exploration and a symbol of safety. In fact, NASA later institutionalized the Silver Snoopy Award, given to employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to human flight safety and mission success, often underlined by a sterling silver lapel pin depicting Snoopy as an astronaut.

Snoopy's Watch Debut: Omega Speedmaster

The most prominent and enduring partnership between Snoopy and the watch world is with Omega. In 1970, Omega received the Silver Snoopy Award from NASA in recognition of its contributions to space exploration, especially the role of the Omega Speedmaster during the critical Apollo 13 mission. To commemorate this, Omega has released several limited-edition "Snoopy" watches that have become darlings of collectors.

Omega Speedmaster Snoopy

The first of these was the Omega Speedmaster Snoopy Award edition in 2003, celebrating 33 years since receiving the prestigious accolade. The watch featured a Snoopy illustration in the small seconds subdial at 9 o'clock and came in a production run of 5,441 pieces – a nod to the length of the Apollo mission in minutes.

In 2015, celebrating 45 years since the Apollo 13 mission, Omega launched the Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award. This version featured a white dial with a special 14-second track, referencing the 14-second mid-course correction the astronauts had to calculate using their Speedmaster watches during the Apollo 13 crisis. A silver Snoopy is depicted on the 9 o'clock subdial, lying on his famous doghouse, rendered in sterling silver and coated with blue enamel.

Omega's latest homage came in 2020, with the Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary watch. This edition features a blue and white color scheme and introduces an animated Snoopy in a command module on the 9 o'clock subdial. When the chronograph is engaged, Snoopy orbits the moon – a delightful mechanical representation of the Apollo 10 module.

Snoopy Goes Beyond Omega: Timex and Undone

Omega is not alone in recognizing the appeal of Charles M. Schulz’s canine creation. Timex, known for its broadly accessible watch collections, has also embraced Snoopy, featuring the character across several lines, including children's watches where Snoopy's hands tell the time, adding a playful touch.

On the other hand, Undone, a brand celebrated for its customizable timepieces, offers a range of Snoopy-themed watches as part of its broader Peanuts collection. These models often depict Snoopy in various guises, from the Red Baron to the cool Joe Cool, capturing his various alter egos with both affection and a touch of whimsy.

The Lasting Appeal

What makes Snoopy such an endearing and enduring figure in the world of watches? Beyond the nostalgia and the joyous whimsy he represents, Snoopy as a symbol connects with themes of exploration, resilience, and the human spirit. His easy charm and everydog persona render him a figure of universal appeal, transcending age, culture, and even the boundaries between luxury and accessibility. From NASA missions to cherished wrist companions, Snoopy's journey through time is as compelling as it is unique. Whether adorning an Omega Speedmaster or brightening the dial of a Timex, Snoopy reminds us that time is filled with adventures, both big and small, and always, a bit of fun.
